The Federal Government has declared Friday, June 12, a public holiday to commemorate this year’s Democracy Day celebration.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in a statement issued through the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Magdalene Ajani.

Tunji-Ojo described June 12 as a significant date in Nigeria’s democratic journey, noting that it represents the courage, resilience and sacrifices of citizens who fought for the restoration and sustenance of democratic governance in the country.

The minister reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to upholding democratic principles, including the rule of law, transparency, accountability and inclusive governance.

He also called on Nigerians to use the occasion to reflect on the nation’s democratic progress and renew their commitment to national unity, responsible citizenship and peaceful coexistence.

According to the minister, Democracy Day serves as an opportunity to celebrate the gains of democracy while encouraging citizens to contribute positively to the country’s continued development.

The annual observance honours the struggles and sacrifices made in the quest for democratic rule and remains one of Nigeria’s most significant national celebrations.
