World-renowned South African jazz pianist and composer Abdullah Ibrahim has died at the age of 91 in Germany, his family has announced.

In a statement, the family said the acclaimed musician, who recorded more than 70 albums, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones after a short illness.
Ibrahim began his professional music career at the age of 15 and later rose to international prominence after being discovered in 1963 in a Zurich jazz club by American jazz great Duke Ellington.

In 1965, he and his wife relocated to New York, where he further established his career and performed on several occasions with the Duke Ellington Orchestra.
Widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in jazz music, Ibrahim’s career spanned several decades, earning him global recognition and respect in the world of music.
