Five African footballers have been identified among the leading contenders for the FIFA World Cup 2026 Young Player Award after impressive performances helped their countries reach the knockout stage of the tournament.
In its latest assessment, FIFA highlighted 11 standout players born on or after January 1, 2005, who have emerged as strong candidates for the award presented to the tournament’s best young player.
Africa accounted for nearly half of the shortlisted talents, with Côte d’Ivoire’s Yan Diomande and Christ Inao Oulai, Algeria’s Ibrahim Maza, Morocco’s Ayyoub Bouaddi and Senegal’s Ibrahim Mbaye all earning recognition.
Diomande has been one of the tournament’s brightest stars. The 19-year-old forward provided an assist in Côte d’Ivoire’s 2-0 victory over Curaçao and became the first player this century to complete 10 dribbles and create 10 chances in his first three World Cup appearances.

His teammate, Christ Inao Oulai, also impressed with his performances in midfield, playing a key role in Côte d’Ivoire’s progression to the Round of 32.
Algeria’s Ibrahim Maza featured in all three group matches and was named Player of the Match after inspiring his side’s victory over Jordan, which secured qualification for the knockout stage.
Morocco midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi also received praise for his composure and creativity. The 18-year-old played an important role in the Atlas Lions’ qualification campaign and featured in their knockout victory over the Netherlands.
Senegal’s Ibrahim Mbaye made history by becoming the youngest African to score at a FIFA World Cup, finding the net against France at the age of 18 years and 143 days.
The remaining players recognised by FIFA include Spain’s Lamine Yamal and Pau Cubarsi, Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Kerim Alajbegovic, Brazil’s Rayan, Switzerland’s Johan Manzambi and Canada’s Luc De Fougerolles.
The FIFA Young Player Award is presented to the tournament’s most outstanding footballer born on or after January 1, 2005, with performances throughout the competition determining the eventual winner.
