Nigeria’s senior men’s basketball team, D’Tigers, delivered another dominant performance on Sunday, defeating Rwanda 106-62 to complete a perfect qualifying window and book a place in the second round of the FIBA Basketball World Cup African Qualifiers.

The emphatic victory ensured Nigeria finished the three-game qualifying window with a flawless record, having also defeated Tunisia and Guinea to revive their hopes of qualifying for the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup.
Point guard Uche Iroegbu led the way with an impressive all-round display, recording 17 points and seven assists. Caleb Agada, Ikechukwu Mekowulu and Stan Okoye each added 13 points as D’Tigers overwhelmed their opponents with a balanced offensive and defensive performance.
Nigeria took control from the opening quarter and never relinquished their advantage, dominating both ends of the court to record one of their most convincing victories in recent years.

The win capped a remarkable turnaround for head coach David Fizdale’s side, who entered the qualifying window under pressure to reignite their World Cup qualification campaign.
D’Tigers began the window with a hard-fought 84-81 victory over Tunisia, with Chimezie Metu and Ike Iroegbu scoring 17 points each. Wes Iwundu contributed 14 points, while Uche Iroegbu added 13 in a closely contested encounter.
Nigeria followed that performance with a dramatic 80-79 comeback victory over Guinea. Caleb Agada led the scoring with 22 points, Uche Iroegbu added 14, and Kaodirichi Akobundu-Ehiogu contributed 10 points as D’Tigers overturned a late deficit to claim their second consecutive win.

The commanding triumph over Rwanda completed a clean sweep of the qualifying window, highlighting the team’s improved chemistry, resilience and consistency under Fizdale.
The three consecutive victories have significantly boosted Nigeria’s hopes of securing a place at the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup while restoring confidence after earlier setbacks in the qualification campaign.
Having successfully navigated the first phase of the qualifiers, D’Tigers will now shift their focus to the second round, where they will face stronger opposition in the battle for one of Africa’s qualification spots for the global tournament.
