Armed men stormed Government Secondary School in Odo-Ekina, Dekina LGA of Kogi State on Tuesday evening and kidnapped six people while students were writing NECO exams.
The attack happened around 5:25pm. The gunmen, suspected to be bandits, took four students, the school principal, and a NECO ad hoc staff member.
Police say a joint team of officers and other security agencies immediately launched a search-and-rescue operation. One of the abducted students has already been rescued.
Kogi State Police Command spokesperson, ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat, confirmed the incident. She said efforts are ongoing to rescue the remaining five victims and arrest those responsible.
The State Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi, moved to the community with the Brigade Commander and the Governor’s Security Adviser, Commodore Jerry Omodara (Rtd), for an on-the-spot assessment.
The police said operations are being intensified to secure the release of the others and restore calm in the area. A full statement will be released as more details come in.
This is the latest in a string of attacks on schools across Nigeria. Students, teachers, and administrators continue to be targeted by armed groups despite government promises to improve security in schools.
