A three-storey lodge in Oko, Anambra State, collapsed late Sunday night, and an unconfirmed number of people, mostly students, are feared dead.
The building, Elite Five Star Lodge, came down around 11pm on July 26, 2026, in Amokpala, Oko, Orumba North Local Government Area, right beside Tonimas Filling Station.
Emergency teams arrived shortly after the distress call. According to Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, a joint operation led by the Anambra State Police Command is underway at the site. The State Fire Service and the State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA, have also joined the rescue.
Ikenga said the area has been secured to prevent further danger and that responders are working to reach anyone still trapped under the rubble. The exact number of casualties has not been confirmed.
“Some injured victims have already been pulled out and taken to a hospital in Oko where they are receiving treatment,” Ikenga stated. “Rescue operations are ongoing to reach other persons who may still be trapped.”
Authorities are asking residents to stay calm, avoid the scene, and not share unverified reports so emergency workers can operate without obstruction.
Officials say further updates will be released once more verified information comes in.
