The Nigerian Army has commenced an investigation into the leak of a classified Department of State Services intelligence memo warning of planned attacks by suspected Boko Haram insurgents and bandits in parts of Adamawa and Borno states.
The leaked document, dated July 27, 2026, and addressed to the Commander of the 23 Armoured Brigade in Yola, reportedly warned of possible coordinated attacks in Michika Local Government Area of Adamawa State and Askira Uba Local Government Area of Borno State.
The intelligence report was said to have followed the reported collapse of a ceasefire arrangement and warned that the suspected terrorists were planning to abduct government officials, councillors, district heads, religious leaders and residents in the affected communities.
Findings by The PUNCH indicate that senior officers at the 232 Battalion in Yola have launched an internal investigation to identify the officer responsible for leaking the confidential document after it was circulated publicly.
A security source familiar with the development said the document had been officially registered at the 232 Battalion before it was leaked.
“If you see the document, it was already punched in the registry of the 232 Battalion. It was after that an officer snapped it and sent it out to whoever he or she wanted for reasons best known to the person,” the source said.
Another military officer described the leak as an act of sabotage, stressing the potential security implications of making sensitive intelligence publicly available.
The leaked memo also reportedly indicated that the insurgents had deployed surveillance teams to monitor activities in the targeted communities ahead of the planned attacks.
The Army’s investigation is expected to determine how the classified document was accessed and circulated, as well as identify those responsible for the breach.
