Victims abducted during the deadly attack on Woro community in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State have returned to Ilorin after spending several months in captivity.
The victims arrived at the Nigerian Army’s 2 Division, Sobi Barracks, Ilorin, late Thursday after they were rescued through sustained security operations.
They were transported from neighbouring Niger State, where they regained their freedom before being moved to Kwara State.
The abduction occurred earlier this year when armed bandits attacked Woro community, killing several residents and abducting many others. The incident triggered public outrage and led to intensified military and security operations aimed at securing the victims’ release.
Upon arrival at the barracks, the rescued victims were taken to an undisclosed location, where they spent the night as security agencies carried out post-rescue verification and provided immediate support.
They are expected to be formally received by Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, who has been involved in efforts to ensure their safe return.
Authorities described the rescue as a significant breakthrough in the prolonged operation to free the victims, while efforts continue to confirm the number of people rescued and provide medical, psychological and humanitarian assistance.
The governor had earlier disclosed that the victims were being treated at a federal medical facility before their transfer to Ilorin.
The victims were abducted during attacks on Woro and Nuku communities in Kaiama Local Government Area in February, while another 145 people were reportedly taken from neighbouring Niger State during the same period.
