Defending champions Nigeria’s Super Falcons will continue their title defence when they face familiar rivals Cameroon in the quarter-finals of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca on Sunday.
The Super Falcons secured their place in the last eight in emphatic fashion, defeating Egypt 6-2 in their final Group C match to finish second behind debutants Malawi.
Nigeria endured a difficult start to the tournament, suffering a shock 3-2 defeat to Malawi before bouncing back with a 1-0 victory over Zambia.
Cameroon, on the other hand, advanced to the knockout stage unbeaten after recording wins over Mali and Ghana before drawing 1-1 with Cape Verde. The Indomitable Lionesses finished top of Group D with seven points.
The Super Falcons will be aiming to maintain their impressive record of reaching the latter stages of the competition.
Nigeria have reached the semi-finals in every previous WAFCON edition they have participated in, and victory over Cameroon would secure their 14th appearance in the last four.
A defeat, however, would see the Super Falcons fail to reach at least the semi-finals of a centralised WAFCON tournament for the first time.
The match also carries significant World Cup implications, with Nigeria seeking to secure qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup. A victory would give the Super Falcons a record-extending 10th appearance at the global tournament.
Nigeria have featured in every edition of the Women’s World Cup since the inaugural tournament in 1991. Cameroon enter the quarter-final with confidence following their unbeaten group-stage campaign.
The Indomitable Lionesses began with a 2-1 win over Mali before defeating Ghana 1-0. They then played out a 1-1 draw against Cape Verde to finish top of Group D.
Cameroon will now be hoping to end Nigeria’s dominance in their WAFCON encounters and reach the semi-finals for the first time since 2018. Sunday’s meeting will be the 14th between Nigeria and Cameroon at the WAFCON finals, making it the most-played fixture in the history of the competition.
Nigeria have won 11 of their previous 13 meetings, including nine victories in regulation time and two wins on penalties. Cameroon have recorded one victory, while the other meeting ended in a draw.
The two teams have faced each other at virtually every stage of the competition, including the group stage, quarter-finals, semi-finals, third-place play-offs and final.
Nigeria have also won their last five knockout meetings with Cameroon, excluding finals and third-place play-offs.
The Super Falcons defeated the Indomitable Lionesses 6-0 in the 1998 semi-final, 5-0 in 2006 and 5-1 in 2010. The 2018 semi-final ended goalless before Nigeria advanced on penalties, while the Falcons also secured a 1-0 victory over Cameroon in the 2022 quarter-finals.
Nigeria have also dominated their three group-stage meetings, winning 3-0 in 2000 and 2-1 in 2012, while the other encounter ended in a 2-2 draw in 2004.
The sides have met twice in third-place play-offs, with Nigeria winning on penalties after a 1-1 draw in 2008, while Cameroon claimed a 1-0 victory in 2012.
They have also contested three WAFCON finals, all of which Nigeria won — 5-0 in 2004, 2-0 in 2014 and 1-0 in 2016. The winner of the Nigeria-Cameroon clash will join hosts Morocco and Algeria in the semi-finals.
Morocco defeated South Africa 2-1 in their quarter-final, while Algeria edged 10-player Ivory Coast 2-1.
Both teams have already secured qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup after reaching the WAFCON semi-finals, with all four semi-finalists guaranteed places at next year’s global tournament.
The Nigeria-Cameroon quarter-final is scheduled for 6:00pm Nigerian time on Sunday at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca.
With a place in the semi-finals, World Cup qualification and Nigeria’s impressive WAFCON record at stake, the Super Falcons will be determined to overcome Cameroon and keep their title defence alive.
