The National Union of Road Transport Workers has thrown its weight behind Zamfara Governor Dauda Lawal’s bid for a second term.
The endorsement came on Wednesday at the Dome Pavilion in Government House, Gusau, where NURTW’s board presented Lawal with an Award of Excellence.
Najeem Yasin, chairman of the NURTW board, led the delegation. He was joined by the union’s national president Musiliu Akinsanya, popularly known as MC Oluomo, and other top officials.
Yasin said the visit was to recognize what Lawal has done for the state since taking office three years ago.
“We came to Gusau today to appreciate your efforts and show the world what you have done,” Yasin said. “By October 1, 2026, Zamfara will be 30 years old. Governor Lawal is truly a gift to Zamfara. The transformation we’ve seen has brought the state up to world standards.”
He also urged NURTW members across Zamfara to mobilize for Lawal’s re-election in 2027.
Responding, the governor said the award and endorsement showed his administration’s strong ties with transport workers.
“I am deeply humbled by these two honours,” Lawal said. “I accept the Award of Excellence as both recognition and a commitment to do more. And I thank NURTW, a key grassroots group, for the endorsement. It tells me our policies are reaching ordinary people.”
Lawal highlighted some of his government’s interventions in the sector. They include distributing 50 subsidized mass transit vehicles to NURTW members and renovating the Zamfara state council secretariat to improve working conditions.
He also acknowledged Yasin as the first NURTW chairman in Zamfara since the state was created in 1996, and praised Akinsanya for leading reforms to professionalize transport nationwide.
The endorsement adds to growing support for Lawal ahead of the 2027 governorship election in Zamfara.
