The Olympic flame is set to make its grand entrance in France on Wednesday, kicking off a meticulously planned ceremony expected to draw a crowd of 150,000 spectators.

This event serves as a significant trial for organizers and security forces in preparation for the upcoming 2024 Paris Games. The transfer of the flame onto French soil, taking place at the southern port of Marseille, initiates a remarkable 12,000-kilometer torch relay journey across mainland France and its distant overseas territories.

Amid ongoing concerns regarding ticket pricing disputes and security issues, organizers are banking on this inaugural public spectacle to ignite enthusiasm for the highly-anticipated “iconic” Olympics, just 79 days away. Tony Estanguet, chief organizer, expressed the long-awaited moment’s significance, marking a century since the last Games, and underscoring the Games’ return to their birthplace.

As the city of Paris gears up to host the opening ceremony on July 26, it marks a historic occasion, with the city’s last hosting stint dating back to 1924, following previous editions in 1900. France holds a pivotal role in the modern Olympic movement, tracing back to Pierre de Coubertin’s revival of the ancient Greek Games’ spirit in the 19th century.

After the recent Olympics marred by challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic and corruption allegations, the Paris Games symbolize a crucial moment of redemption and celebration for the global sporting community. The torch’s arrival from the historic Belem, a 19th-century French tall ship completing a 12-day journey from Greece, promises a captivating spectacle embodying Marseille’s rich maritime heritage.

With over 1,000 accompanying boats, the flame’s arrival at the revamped Marseille marina, the future site of sailing events, is expected to draw massive crowds, complemented by fireworks and a live concert broadcasted nationwide.

Against the backdrop of heightened security measures, with 6,000 security personnel deployed, the torch’s passage through over 450 French towns and cities will be closely monitored, anticipating potential protests or disruptions.

The torch relay, a symbolic tradition harkening back to ancient Olympic rituals, serves as a precursor to the Paris Olympics, promising a blend of spectacle and tradition when the Games officially kick off on July 26th, followed by the Paralympics from August 28th to September 8th, 2024.
