Renowned government critic Crépin Mboli-Goumba, leader of the Republican Bloc for the Defence of the Constitution (BRDC), found himself detained by Central African Republic (CAR) authorities when he and his wife attempted to depart from the capital, Bangui, at the primary airport.

While his wife was eventually released, Mr. Mboli-Goumba remained in custody after their planned trip to Douala, Cameroon, allegedly for medical purposes.

The circumstances surrounding his arrest remain shrouded in mystery. Reports from local media suggest that the outspoken critic may have become a target of the judiciary due to his outspoken commentary on a property dispute involving a “legal mafia” connected to former president Andre Kolingba’s family.

Specifically, Mr. Mboli-Goumba accused Minister of State Arnaud Djoubaye Abazene of meddling in this contentious matter.

The detainee has consistently voiced strong opposition to President Faustin Archange Touadera’s government, regularly denouncing the presence of the Russian mercenary firm Wagner Group in the nation.

As tensions escalate, the reasons behind his arrest appear to be entangled in a complex web of political and legal intricacies, leaving observers keenly awaiting further developments in this unfolding narrative.
