A bill to repeal the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) Act 2007 has passed its second reading in the Senate.
The proposed bill aims to establish a National Identity Database, tasking the NIMC with maintaining this database, registering individuals, and issuing identity credentials. The bill which was Initially read on June 5, the bill was sponsored by Deputy Senate President Senator Barau Jibrin on Tuesday.
The bill seeks to enhance the efficiency and inclusivity of the Identity Management System through comprehensive updates, aligning it with global best practices.
In a lead debate, the legislation was described as crucial for the socio-economic and political development of the country, as well as for national security and an effective identity management system.
The bill also aims to streamline the sharing of personal data, incorporate robust data protection measures to safeguard individuals’ privacy and confidentiality, and foster trust among citizens in the handling of their information.
