Libyan authorities have taken action against the commercial director of Ghadames Air, ordering their arrest on charges related to facilitating illegal migrant transport to the United States through Nicaragua.
The Tripoli-based Attorney General’s office announced the investigation into the official for activities deemed detrimental to national interests.
According to the Attorney General’s statement, Ghadames Air, a private airline established in 2021 and headquartered in Tripoli, allegedly transported numerous individuals to Nicaragua, with intentions to unlawfully enter the United States. The statement highlighted concerns that the airline operated flights from East Asian countries without adhering to legal obligations and national immigration laws.
Details regarding the origin countries of the migrants were not disclosed by the Attorney General’s office. Ghadames Air has not yet commented on the allegations.
Since the overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, Libya, rich in oil resources, has faced instability, becoming a primary transit point for migrants attempting to cross the Mediterranean into Europe.
