The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the registration of 177,914 new voters ahead of the forthcoming governorship elections in Edo and Ondo States.
According to a statement by Sam Olumekun, the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Edo State registered 119,206 new voters, while Ondo State registered 58,708. These figures come after the initial release of preliminary numbers on June 11, 2024, and subsequent verification using the Automated Biometric Identification System.

“These processes have now been concluded. The number of new voters for Edo State is 119,206 and 58,708 for Ondo State,” Olumekun stated.

The statement clarified that these figures do not include the 8,847 voter transfer applications into Edo State and 3,132 into Ondo State from other regions. Applications for transfers within the states have already been integrated into the voter register.

INEC will release the comprehensive and final voter register for both states in the coming days. For transparency, detailed analyses of the new voters, categorized by local government areas, gender, age, occupation, and disability status, have been made available on INEC’s website and social media platforms.
The Edo governorship election is scheduled for September 21, 2024, with seventeen political parties fielding candidates. The Ondo election will take place on November 16, 2024, also with seventeen political parties, though none of the candidates are female.
