UNESCO has officially named Rabat, Morocco, as the World Book Capital for 2026, following a recommendation from the World Book Capital Advisory Committee.

The organization praised Rabat for its dedication to promoting the book industry and fostering a culture of reading, citing its 54 publishing houses and hosting Africa’s third-largest international book fair, according to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).

Rabat plans to launch various initiatives aimed at improving book access, bolstering the local publishing sector, and enhancing literacy among all age groups and demographics, both in Morocco and globally.

The celebrations will kick off on April 23, 2026, coinciding with World Book and Copyright Day.
