A joyous celebration turned tragic in Lukaya, central Uganda, when a security guard allegedly shot and killed a 30-year-old Arsenal fan, John Ssenyonga, following the team’s 2-0 victory over Manchester United. Another fan, Lawrence Mugejera, sustained injuries and was hospitalized.

The incident occurred at a restaurant 100km from Kampala, where a large group of jubilant supporters had gathered to watch the game. According to eyewitnesses, the restaurant’s manager, frustrated by the noise, instructed the security guard to intervene. Despite warnings to quiet down, the fans reportedly grew louder after the manager cut the power to the building.

In response, the security guard allegedly fired multiple shots into the crowd, killing Ssenyonga on the spot. Both the manager and the guard fled the scene and remain at large, while police have recovered a firearm as part of their investigation.

Regional police spokesman Twaha Kasirye condemned the incident and appealed to the public for information that could lead to the suspects’ arrest. He also urged football fans to exercise restraint during celebrations.

Such incidents underscore the heightened emotions and occasional violence that can accompany football matches in Uganda, where the English Premier League enjoys immense popularity.
