The Nigerian Army has dismissed claims of a leadership vacuum due to the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, being on annual leave. In a statement released by Maj. Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, Director of Army Public Relations, the army addressed concerns circulating on social media, describing them as baseless rumors intended to cause unnecessary alarm.

Nwachukwu clarified that protocols had been put in place prior to Lagbaja’s leave, with Maj. Gen. Abdulsalami Ibrahim, Chief of Policy and Plans (Army), assuming acting responsibilities in his absence. He emphasized that this process is routine within the army and does not disrupt personnel postings, promotions, or operations.

“The Nigerian Army is a well-structured institution with clear procedures for such situations,” Nwachukwu said. He assured that all ongoing activities, including promotion exercises, were on schedule. He referenced recent events like the Captain-Major Practical Promotion Examination in Akure and the ongoing Master Warrant Officer Promotion Exercise in Jos, all supervised in line with established protocols.

Contrary to rumours, Nwachukwu noted that it is not the COAS’ role to directly sign promotion results, as these responsibilities are routinely handled by departmental chiefs. He urged the public to remain confident in the army’s operations and assured that the service is fully prepared to defend the nation’s territorial integrity.

He also expressed gratitude for the well wishes and prayers for Lt. Gen. Lagbaja during his leave and medical check-up abroad, reassuring the public that all land-based operational and administrative activities are being efficiently managed.
