Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has announced significant progress on the Lagos State Mental Institute, a state-of-the-art psychiatric and rehabilitation facility under construction in Ketu-Ejirin, Epe. Scheduled to open in late 2025, the institute is poised to become the largest of its kind in sub-Saharan Africa, featuring a 500-bed capacity.

Governor Sanwo-Olu, accompanied by Health Commissioner Prof. Akin Abayomi and Special Adviser for Works Engr. Adekunle Olayinka, toured the site and highlighted its innovative design and purpose.

“Phase I of the project is 50% complete,” Sanwo-Olu revealed. “It includes consultation rooms, dormitories, dining halls, kitchens, staff quarters, and recreational spaces spread across a serene 25-hectare expanse. This facility will provide end-to-end psychiatric care, combining psychotherapy and rehabilitation in a first-class environment.”

The institute’s bungalow-style architecture is tailored to meet the specialised needs of mental health patients, adhering to international standards for psychiatric care. Governor Sanwo-Olu noted that this design ensures a therapeutic and accessible environment for both patients and staff.

Construction, managed by Messrs Formwork Limited, has seen substantial progress, with structural work completed for Phase I. Landscaping and equipment installation will follow in the coming months, paving the way for operations to begin by the last quarter of 2025.

Once operational, the Lagos State Mental Institute is expected to set new benchmarks for mental healthcare delivery in the region, reinforcing the government’s commitment to providing world-class healthcare for its residents.
