The Bauchi State government has inaugurated a medical oxygen plant and Newborn Care Unit, jointly donated by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and Canada IHS at the General Hospital, Azare.

Speaking at the ceremony, Governor Bala Mohammed, represented by his deputy, Auwal Jatau, noted that the oxygen plant was a vital component in healthcare, essential for the treatment of various ailments, particularly respiratory illnesses, and key in addressing life-threatening maternal and newborn emergencies.

The governor said such partnership illuminates the path towards sustainable development and enhances healthcare services.

“It is in times like this that support is required from our partners, knowing the realities of the current global economic predicaments, particularly developing nations like Nigeria,” Mohammed said.

UNICEF Nigeria Country Representative, Christian Munduate, explained that the oxygen plant would ensure that critical life-saving interventions, particularly for newborns and children suffering from pneumonia and other respiratory illnesses, are treated.

The Commissioner for Health, Sani Dambam, warned against misuse of the facility while applauding the donors for the life-saving project.   He said the plant was the third in the entire state, while two others are on the way
