Kenyan photographer Jacktone Odhiambo has been handed a 50-year prison sentence for the brutal murder of his housemate, LGBTQ+ activist and fashion designer Edwin Kiprotich Kipruto, widely known as Edwin Chiloba.

The sentencing, delivered by Judge Reuben Nyakundi, cited the “diabolical manner” in which Chiloba, 25, was killed.

The court heard that Chiloba was smothered to death, his body later stuffed in a metal box and dumped on a roadside in Eldoret nearly two years ago.

Justice Nyakundi emphasized that Odhiambo, also 25, exhibited no remorse for his actions. However, the courtroom was momentarily disrupted after the sentencing when Odhiambo collapsed in tears.

“I have considered all factors and found that Odhiambo was a vengeful person who committed the killing of his close friend,” said the judge.

Chiloba, who was a student at the University of Eldoret, shared a home with Odhiambo. Reports suggested that the two may have been in a relationship, though the court refrained from making any conclusions about the motive.

Prosecution lawyer Mark Mugun presented damning evidence, including DNA analysis and testimonies from 23 witnesses, proving Odhiambo’s involvement. The prosecution also revealed that Odhiambo splurged Chiloba’s money after the murder.

A post-mortem confirmed Chiloba died from asphyxiation after being smothered, with additional evidence showing he had been sexually assaulted before his death.

Chiloba’s body was discovered with socks stuffed into his mouth and denim tied around his face.

The shocking murder sparked outrage and fear within Kenya’s LGBTQ+ community, amplifying concerns over violence against queer individuals.
