Ghana’s President-elect John Dramani Mahama has unveiled a transition team focused on tackling corruption, signaling his commitment to recovering stolen public funds and holding offenders accountable once he assumes office.
In a statement signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, spokesperson for the Mahama Transition Team, the group has been tasked with gathering information on suspected corruption cases as part of the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) initiative.
The team features prominent figures, including:
- Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa – Chairman
- Former Auditor-General Daniel Domelovo
- Retired COP Nathaniel Kofi Boakye
- Legal Practitioner Martin Kpebu
- Investigative Journalist Raymond Archer
“Anti-corruption, with Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) as a major plank, formed a core part of H.E. John Mahama’s policy platform in the 2024 campaign, and he intends to hit the ground running on these commitments,” the statement emphasized.
Election Victory and Mandate
Mahama, 66, was formally declared winner of Ghana’s recent presidential election with 56.55% of the vote, defeating Vice President and ruling-party candidate Mahamudu Bawumia, who conceded defeat to ease post-election tensions.
The Electoral Commission reported that Mahama’s victory came from votes counted across 267 out of 276 constituencies, with voter turnout at 60.9%.
In his acceptance speech, Mahama addressed jubilant supporters, saying, “This mandate serves as a constant reminder of what fate awaits us if we fail to reach the aspirations of our people and govern with arrogance.”
Leadership and Legacy
Having previously served as Ghana’s president from 2012 to 2016, Mahama’s return to power comes with a promise to reverse policies he blames for Ghana’s worst economic crisis in a generation. His anti-corruption stance, encapsulated in the ORAL initiative, reflects his determination to rebuild public trust and foster good governance.
The president-elect’s decisive action is expected to set the tone for his administration, prioritizing transparency and accountability in Ghana’s leadership.
