There was a significant security deployment in Ilesa on Friday as Clement Adesuyi Haastrup, a former Deputy Governor of Osun State, was declared the Owa-Obokun-elect from the Bilaro Ruling House.
The throne became vacant following the passing of Oba Gabriel Aromolaran in September 2024, after a 42-year reign. Following the monarch’s demise, the Ijesa High Chiefs initiated the selection process for his successor.
Earlier this month, an Osun State High Court presided over by Justice Adeyinka Aderibigbe issued a restraining order preventing the election or appointment of a new Owa-Obokun until a pending legal suit was resolved. Despite this order, Haastrup, who previously served as deputy governor under the late Isiaka Adeleke, elder brother to the current governor, emerged as the Owa-Obokun-elect.

In a statement on Friday, Isaac Haastrup, Public Relations Officer of the Bilaro Olu-Odo Ruling House, announced Haastrup’s election as the Owa-Obokun Ajimoko III and Paramount Ruler of Ijesaland.
“He defeated nine other candidates in a transparent selection process held at the Ilesa West Local Government Secretariat along the Ilesa-Oshogbo road,” the statement read.
The selection involved the participation of Iwora Mefa kingmakers, including notable chiefs such as Obaala High Chief Ibitoye and others, alongside representatives of seven Agba Ijesa. The process was overseen by the Head of Local Government Administration in Ilesa West, Mrs. Felicia Olabimtan, who declared Haastrup the winner, having secured the highest number of votes.
“She stated that six kingmakers cast their votes, while one was absent and seven others were deemed ineligible,” the release noted.
Meanwhile, Oba Festus Awogboro, the Ogboni of Ibokun, confirmed his participation in the voting process, stating, “I only voted; I don’t know the result.” Heavy security personnel, including military operatives, were stationed across Ilesa to maintain order during the proceedings.
