The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has announced enhanced national vigilance and preparedness measures in response to rising global concerns over human metapneumovirus (HMPV).

In a statement signed by NCDC Director-General Dr. Jide Idris, the agency revealed that a dynamic risk assessment conducted in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health and partners classified the risk of HMPV in Nigeria as moderate.
Although countries like China have reported a surge in HMPV cases, the World Health Organization (WHO) has not declared the virus a public health emergency of international concern. The NCDC urged Nigerians to rely on credible information from trusted sources such as the NCDC and WHO.

Dr. Idris advised citizens to adopt preventive measures, including:
- Regular hand washing
- Practicing respiratory hygiene
- Avoiding crowded places
Human metapneumovirus is a respiratory virus that can cause illnesses ranging from mild cold-like symptoms to severe respiratory infections, particularly in young children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems.
Currently, there is no specific antiviral treatment or vaccine for HMPV. Recovery relies on supportive care, including rest, hydration, and fever management.
