A 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck Ethiopia early Saturday, east of the capital, Addis Ababa, according to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ).

The earthquake was shallow, occurring at a depth of just 10 kilometers (6.2 miles), GFZ reported.
The region has experienced numerous minor tremors in recent months, coinciding with signs of increased activity from a nearby volcano, which has shown indications of a possible eruption since the beginning of the year.
