The occasion drew a host of dignitaries, including members of the Federal Executive Council, Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, service chiefs, Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, Chief Justice of Nigeria, Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, and other top officials. Military widows, families of fallen officers, and members of the diplomatic corps also joined the commemoration.

Key highlights of the ceremony included a symbolic gun salute, the laying of wreaths, and other military rituals that paid tribute to the bravery and sacrifices of Nigeria’s armed forces. Governor Ahmed Ododo of Kogi State, speaking in Lokoja, pledged free health insurance for the spouses of soldiers who lost their lives in service, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to supporting these families.

Governor Ododo called for a collective effort from both the government and citizens to assist the families of fallen heroes, urging affluent individuals to extend their support. “The sacrifices of our fallen heroes will not be in vain. Their bravery underscores the unity and strength of our nation,” he stated. As Nigeria continues to face security challenges 64 years after independence, leaders at the federal and state levels emphasized that the legacy of the nation’s heroes endures and their families will not be forgotten.
