English Premier League Club, Fulham FC has strongly condemned the racist and homophobic abuse directed at Calvin Bassey following his goal in Sunday’s FA Cup victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford.
The Nigeria international put Fulham ahead before half-time in a match that ended 1-1, before his team triumphed on penalties to book a spot in the FA Cup quarter-finals.
In a statement released on Monday, Fulham expressed outrage over the online abuse the defender received, vowing to take action.
“Fulham Football Club is utterly appalled at the racist and homophobic abuse received and subsequently shared by Calvin Bassey on social media after Sunday’s FA Cup tie against Manchester United.”
“We strongly condemn this abhorrent behaviour, which has no place in football or society. Such actions are entirely unacceptable, and we stand in full support of Calvin Bassey, who will continue to receive our full backing.”
“We will do everything in our power to work with the relevant authorities to identify the perpetrators of these vile messages and take the strongest possible action against them.”
Bassey’s case is the latest in a string of racial abuse incidents in football. In December, Manchester City’s Kyle Walker faced similar abuse after their Champions League loss to Juventus.
In February, Manchester City forward Khadija Shaw missed a match due to mental health reasons after being targeted with racist abuse following a Women’s Super League defeat to Arsenal.
Fulham reaffirmed their commitment to fighting discrimination and fostering an inclusive environment:
“Fulham Football Club is committed to maintaining a firm stance against all forms of discrimination and remains dedicated to fostering an environment of respect and inclusion.” Following their impressive FA Cup win, Fulham will host Crystal Palace in the quarter-finals on March 29.
