President Tinubu Hails Team Nigeria’s Historic Commonwealth Games Performance

President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Team Nigeria on its outstanding performance at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, praising the athletes and officials for representing the country with honour, dignity and pride.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President commended the Nigerian contingent for their determination, resilience and impressive achievements throughout the competition.

He said every member of Team Nigeria, whether they won medals or not, displayed courage and patriotism in representing the nation on the international stage.

“Whether on the podium or through courageous performances in the competition, every member of Team Nigeria has represented our nation with honour, dignity and pride,” the statement read.

President Tinubu expressed appreciation to the athletes, coaches, technical officials, medical personnel, administrators and other members of the delegation whose dedication contributed to Nigeria’s successful outing at the Games.

Team Nigeria finished the competition with 24 medals comprising 10 gold, seven silver and seven bronze medals. The performance earned the country seventh place on the overall medals table and made Nigeria the highest-ranked African nation at the Games.

The President described the achievement as one of Nigeria’s best performances at the Commonwealth Games, attributing the success to the hard work, discipline and perseverance of the athletes and officials.

Tinubu also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening sports development by investing in sporting infrastructure, improving training facilities and creating more opportunities for Nigerian athletes to compete and excel at continental and global competitions.

He expressed confidence that the experience gained by the athletes would inspire future successes while encouraging more young Nigerians to embrace sports, discipline and national service.

The President further commended the Nigeria Olympic Committee and the National Sports Commission for their continued efforts in supporting athletes and promoting sports development in the country.

He urged Team Nigeria to remain focused and continue striving for greater success in future international competitions.
