Lagos State House of Assembly has been taken over by armed security personnel, creating a tense atmosphere as lawmakers prepare for an emergency plenary session.
The heavy security presence, which has been stationed at the assembly complex for about two weeks, was boosted on Monday, March 3, 2025.
According to reports, the newly elected Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, is expected to resign to pave the way for a new speaker, in line with the zoning arrangement for candidates from the west zone.
The Rapid Response Squad (RRS) and armed men from the Police Command have taken strategic positions around the premises, searching every guest, including staff, before allowing access to the complex.
A staff member, who spoke on condition of anonymity, described the atmosphere as “very tensed” with heavy security around the assembly. “It was difficult for the staff to gain access to the Assembly. It took me over an hour before I was allowed into the premises,” the staff member said.
The development comes after weeks of political maneuvering and interventions, culminating in President Bola Tinubu and top leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) reaching a resolution on the crisis rocking the Lagos State House of Assembly.
The decision solidifies Mudashiru Obasa’s removal as Speaker, allowing him a soft landing by commuting his removal to resignation.
