Former NPFL champions, Akwa United took a major step in their fight against relegation with a 2-0 away victory over 10-man Kwara United in Ilorin on Sunday. The win marked their first away triumph of the 2024/25 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season.

Kabiru Osoba and Uche Sebastine scored in each half to secure the crucial three points for coach Kennedy Boboye’s side. The victory lifts Akwa United to 17th place, just two points away from safety.

Kwara United suffered an early setback in the 24th minute when defender Segun Adekunle was shown a straight red card for a foul. Akwa United quickly capitalized, with Osoba scoring two minutes later from a rebound. Sebastine doubled the lead in the 73rd minute, sealing their first road win of the campaign.

    In Port Harcourt, Rivers United closed the gap on league leaders Remo Stars with a 1-0 win over Ikorodu City. Stephen Manyo scored a stoppage-time winner at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, keeping Rivers United’s title hopes alive. They now sit five points behind Remo Stars, who had their match against Lobi Stars postponed.
  • Abia Warriors Sink Heartland in Oriental Derby
    In Owerri, Abia Warriors handed Heartland a 1-0 defeat, pushing them back into the relegation zone. Ojonugwa Adejoh secured the win with a brilliant 81st-minute free kick, moving Abia Warriors to third place with 47 points, five behind second-placed Rivers United.
  • Shooting Stars End Winless Streak
    In Ibadan, Shooting Stars ended their seven-match winless run with a 3-1 victory over Niger Tornadoes, reigniting their chase for a continental ticket.
  • Katsina United Thrash El Kanemi
    Katsina United were in dominant form, securing a 3-0 home win over El Kanemi.
  • Enyimba Held by Bayelsa United
    In Aba, reigning champions Enyimba were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw against Bayelsa United.

With the NPFL season heating up, teams continue to battle for the title, continental spots, and survival, setting the stage for an exciting run-in.
