Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni arrived in South Sudan on Thursday, April 3, 2025, in a bid to ease tensions in the country, which has been plagued by a political crisis.
The crisis escalated after South Sudan’s First Vice President Riek Machar was placed under house arrest, sparking fears of a return to civil war.
Museveni was received at the Juba International Airport by South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir, whose administration has accused Machar of stoking rebellion.
The Ugandan leader’s visit follows mediation missions by the African Union and an East African regional body aimed at de-escalating the crisis.
The standoff between Kiir and Machar, who led opposing forces in a 2013-2018 civil war, has raised concerns about the country’s stability.
The United Nations has warned that South Sudan could be on the brink of all-out conflict along ethnic lines.
