Some former domestic workers of ex-First Lady Patience Jonathan have been held in prison for six years over alleged jewelry theft and other charges.

The workers, who were arrested in 2019, claim they are being maltreated and denied a fair trial.

They were accused of stealing seven gold bangles and jewelry, five Samsung air conditioners, two sets of upholstery chairs, and six Samsung flat-screen televisions valued at N200m.

The workers also face 18 counts of conspiracy to commit murder, conspiracy to commit felony, and burglary.

A human rights organization has accused the Bayelsa state judiciary of succumbing to pressure from influential individuals close to Jonathan, leading to the delayed trial.

The workers’ pleas for help have fallen on deaf ears, with many expressing fear for their lives.
