SpaceX’s Starlink satellite system is now available in Somalia, marking a significant milestone in the country’s journey towards digital inclusion.
The development was announced by Elon Musk, the owner of SpaceX, on social media platform X.
A Somalia government official, Mustafa
Yasiin, director of communication in the telecommunications ministry, confirmed that Starlink has been granted a license to operate in the country.
Yasiin revealed that the government had been in talks with Starlink for two and a half years before granting the license and expressed hope that the system will enhance the quality of existing internet services and expand access to remote areas across Somalia.
The introduction of Starlink is expected to bridge the digital divide, particularly in rural and underserved areas where reliable internet access has been elusive, and provide a viable solution for Somalia’s telecommunications sector.
