The 17th Headies Awards, held on Sunday at the Landmark Event Centre in Lagos, paid an emotional tribute to the late singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, honouring his contributions to the Nigerian music scene.
Mohbad, who made a significant impact with hits like “Feel Good” and “Peace,” was posthumously awarded Best Street-Hop Artiste. This category celebrates musicians who have made notable contributions to street culture.
The atmosphere grew even more emotional when Mohbad’s widow, Omowunmi, took the stage to accept the award on his behalf. Fighting back tears, she delivered a heartfelt speech, reflecting on her husband’s enduring legacy.
Omowunmi told the audience that she does not see Mohbad as her “late husband,” emphasizing that he lives on through their young son, Liam, and his music.
“On behalf of myself, my son Liam, my husband’s immediate younger brother, Adura, and the rest of the Imonelization family, we want to specially thank you for this award,” she said.
Mohbad’s recognition at the Headies underscores his lasting influence on Afrobeats and street-hop music, despite his untimely passing.
