Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has held a “productive meeting” with representatives of Elon Musk’s Starlink, which is looking to establish a presence in the East African country.
Starlink, a satellite internet company, is rapidly expanding its services on the African continent and has already launched in over a dozen countries.
Museveni expressed appreciation for Starlink’s commitment to providing low-cost internet in hard-to-reach areas and welcomed their potential entry into Uganda.
The country has struggled with high-cost and unreliable internet services, with consumers blaming the lack of sufficient competition in the market.
It is unclear if Starlink has formally applied for a license to operate in Uganda, and the sector regulator Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) did not respond to requests for comment.
The move could potentially challenge the dominance of existing players like MTN and Bharti Airtel in Uganda’s data market.
