Professor Sonni Tyoden, a renowned academic and former Deputy Governor of Plateau State, has passed away at the age of 74.

Tyoden served as Deputy Governor under former Governor Simon Lalong from 2015 to 2023 and was also a former Vice Chancellor of the University of Jos. He was known for his contributions to academia and public service.

Tributes and Condolences

Reacting to his death, former Governor Simon Lalong expressed deep sorrow, describing Tyoden as “a trusted political ally, confidant, teacher, and mentor” who served the state with dedication.

Lalong led a condolence visit to Tyoden’s residence, praising his stability, wisdom, and experience in government.

He also highlighted Tyoden’s accomplishments in academia, noting his distinguished scholarship and mentorship of students.

Legacy

As Vice Chancellor of the University of Jos, Tyoden transformed the institution and improved its academic standing.

He was a Professor of Political Science and published several notable works, including “Inter and intra-party relations: towards a more stable party system in Nigeria” and “The Kaduna Mafia”. Tyoden’s legacy extends beyond politics, with a lasting impact on education and public service.

Family and Burial Arrangements

Tyoden is survived by his wife, Abigail Tyoden, and children. The family has announced that burial arrangements will be communicated in the coming days.

Condolences have poured in from across the state and beyond, with many mourning the loss of a dedicated public servant and academic leader.
