Nigeria’s Flying Eagles were forced to settle for a 0-0 draw against Morocco in a tense Group B encounter at the CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations on Sunday in Cairo.
The highly anticipated match — a nod to their classic 2005 semi-final battle — saw both teams cancel each other out in a game filled with grit, injuries, and tactical discipline but lacking cutting edge in front of goal.

The result marked Nigeria’s 99th appearance in the competition’s history and leaves the seven-time champions on four points after two games. The draw also extends their unbeaten run in second group games to five matches, with the last loss coming in 2011.
Despite enjoying long spells of possession and dominance, coach Aliyu Zubairu’s side struggled to break down a resolute Moroccan defense. Captain Daniel Bameyi stood out with a commanding performance, recording the most touches (75) and 59 successful passes (72.9% accuracy), helping to keep Morocco without a single shot on target.

The game, however, was marred by injuries and persistent fouling. Morocco lost Othmane Maamma to injury in stoppage time of the first half, while Nigeria’s Divine Oliseh and Clinton Jephta also picked up knocks that forced substitutions.
Nigeria’s best chances came from Israel Ayuma, Emmanuel Chukwu, and Divine Oliseh, but none could convert. Ayuma fired wide late in the game, while Chukwu’s first-half header missed the target.
Tensions flared with multiple bookings: Nigeria’s Rickson Mendos and Jephta, and Morocco’s Hossam Essadak and Hamza Koutoune were all shown yellow cards for rough tackles.

With both sides on four points, the group remains wide open heading into the final round. Nigeria will face bottom-placed Kenya — yet to register a point — at the 30 June Stadium in Cairo, while Morocco clash with Tunisia in a high-stakes showdown in Ismailia.
