The Federal Government has established a reform committee to overhaul the National Youth Service Corps, aiming to strengthen its structure, relevance and impact.
This move is expected to align the scheme more closely with national development goals and the evolving needs of Nigerian youths.
The committee’s mandate includes conducting a comprehensive review of the NYSC scheme, proposing far-reaching reforms and submitting a detailed report within an agreed timeframe.
Key areas of focus will include reviewing existing policy documents, engaging with stakeholders nationwide and recommending legal, policy and institutional reforms.
The Minister of Education has also proposed introducing a Teachers’ Corps and Medical Corps for graduates and healthcare professionals willing to serve in rural areas.
This development seeks to modernize the NYSC, addressing challenges such as safety concerns and infrastructural deficits, while positioning the scheme as a strategic tool for youth empowerment and nation-building.
