Former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido has called on President Bola Tinubu to compensate the family of late Moshood Abiola with ₦45 billion as restitution for the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election.

Lamido made the appeal during the public presentation of his autobiography, “Being True to Myself,” in Abuja, arguing that the payment would symbolize justice and offer moral closure to one of Nigeria’s most painful democratic reversals.

Lamido’s request is based on General Ibrahim Babangida’s recent memoir, where the former military ruler revealed that Abiola won the election and mentioned that Abiola was owed ₦45 billion.

According to Lamido, paying this amount would rectify the injustice faced by Abiola, who was denied his presidency and the money.

The June 12 election is widely regarded as Nigeria’s freest and fairest, with Abiola securing 8,128,720 votes against Bashir Tofa’s 5,848,247. Babangida’s decision to annul the election has been a subject of national debate, with mixed reactions to his memoir.

While some praise Babangida for acknowledging Abiola’s victory, others argue that the memoir deflects accountability.
