A Tunisian court has sentenced Sahbi Atig, a senior official in the Ennahda party, to 15 years in prison on charges of money laundering.

Atig’s lawyer, Mokthar Jmaayi, said the verdict lacks credible evidence and aims to eliminate political opponents.

The sentence is part of a broader crackdown on opposition figures under President Kais Saied, who has been expanding his powers since 2021.

Atig denied the charges, saying they were fabricated.

The judiciary in Tunisia has faced concerns about independence after Saied dissolved the Supreme Judicial Council and dismissed dozens of judges in 2022.

Many opposition leaders, including Abir Moussi and Rached Ghannouchi, are currently in prison.
