Senate President Godswill Akpabio has condemned the recent deadly attack on Yelewata community in Benue State, describing the killing of innocent civilians as “an act of terrorism.”

Speaking during plenary on Wednesday, Akpabio expressed grave concern over the violent nature of the incident and raised the possibility of political motives behind the assault.

“I hope this is not politically motivated,” he said, while calling for the swift identification and prosecution of those behind the killings.

The Senate also resolved to investigate the murder of twelve travellers from Zaria, Kaduna State, who were en route to a wedding in Plateau State before they were ambushed and killed on Saturday in Mangu District, Mangu Local Government Area.

The resolution followed a motion moved by Senator Khalid Mustapha (Kaduna Central), which prompted lawmakers to condemn the attack in strong terms.

As part of its actions, the Senate observed a minute’s silence in honour of the victims and tasked its committees on National Security, Defence, and Police Affairs to carry out a comprehensive investigation into the killings and propose necessary steps to prevent a recurrence.

In addition, the Senate called on the Inspector General of Police to ensure the prompt arrest and prosecution of those responsible for the Mangu massacre.
