Abakaliki FC were involved in a road accident on their way back to Ebonyi State, just hours after losing the 2025 President’s Federation Cup final to Kwara United in Lagos.

According to a statement posted on the club’s official Facebook page, the incident occurred on Saturday, June 29, along the Ondo expressway when one of the team’s official buses suffered brake failure and collided with a moving truck.

Despite the crash, the club confirmed that no lives were lost and no injuries were sustained.

“To God be the glory, no injury and no life was lost,” the statement read. “One of our vehicles (official’s bus) failed brake along Ondo express highway and hit a moving truck at the back. We thank God, we are all safe and sound.”

Photos shared online showed some damage to the bus involved in the accident.

The incident follows their narrow loss to Kwara United on penalties in the Federation Cup final played at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Lagos. It also comes barely a month after 21 athletes from Kano State tragically died in a separate accident while returning from the National Sports Festival in Ogun State.
