Nigeria sealed top spot in Group B at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) following a 0-0 draw against Algeria in Casablanca on Sunday, setting up a quarter-final showdown with Zambia.
Despite dominating possession and creating more opportunities, the Super Falcons were unable to break down a disciplined Algerian defence. The draw, however, ensured Nigeria finished the group stage with seven points and without conceding a single goal.
Algeria also celebrated a major milestone, advancing to the WAFCON knockout stage for the first time in their history. They finished second in the group, backed by a resolute defence that did not concede in any of their three matches.

Although Nigeria, chasing a record-extending 10th continental title, were in control for much of the match, they lacked clinical edge in front of goal. Rasheedat Ajibade and Jennifer Echegini looked the most dangerous, but clear-cut chances were few. Echegini came close in the 89th minute, narrowly missing the target with a curling effort.
Meanwhile, in another Group B match, Botswana staged a late comeback to beat Tunisia 2-1. Yesmin Khanchouch gave Tunisia an early lead, but Lesego Radiakanyo equalised midway through the second half before Gaonyadiwe Ontlametse struck the winner deep into stoppage time. The victory boosts Botswana’s hopes of qualifying as one of the two best third-placed teams.
With Sunday’s results, defending champions South Africa and Mali are also assured of quarter-final places ahead of their Group C clash on Monday. Ghana and Tanzania, who face off in the other Group C fixture, must win to stay in the tournament.
Algeria will now face the runners-up of Group C on Saturday, while Nigeria turn their focus to Friday’s high-stakes quarter-final battle against Zambia.
