The National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) has called off its warning strike, which began on July 29, 2025, after a closed-door meeting with the Minister of Health, Ali Pate.
The decision was announced by Pate following the meeting, although the union’s leaders declined to comment on the matter.
The strike was initiated due to the government’s failure to respond meaningfully to the union’s 15-day ultimatum issued on July 14, 2025, regarding longstanding concerns about nurses’ welfare and poor working conditions.
The nurses had demanded improved welfare, fair allowances, and better working conditions, including an upward review of shift allowances, adjustment of uniform allowances, and implementation of a separate salary structure for nurses.
The union’s demands also included mass employment of nurses and the creation of a dedicated nursing department in the Federal Ministry of Health.
The suspension of the strike comes after agreements were reportedly reached between the government and the nursing association’s leadership.
