Guinea-Bissau’s President Umaro Sissoco Embalo has appointed Braima Camara, a former coordinator of the opposition Madem G15 party, as the country’s new prime minister, three months before the presidential and legislative elections.
Camara replaces Rui Duarte de Barros in the role, marking the third prime ministerial appointment since Embalo took office in 2020.
The appointment comes ahead of the elections scheduled for November 23, where Embalo has announced his intention to run for a second term, despite earlier promises to step down, sparking tensions over the postponed elections and concerns about the country’s democratic stability.
The move to appoint Camara, a former opposition member, could be seen as an attempt to build a broader coalition or appease opposition groups ahead of the elections.
