South Africa is set to present the United States with a revised trade proposal aimed at easing the 30% tariff recently imposed on its exports, Trade Minister Parks Tau announced on Tuesday.
Speaking at a press conference, Tau confirmed that the country’s cabinet had approved submitting a new offer to Washington as a basis for fresh negotiations.
“The new offer substantively addresses the concerns raised by the U.S. in its 2025 National Trade Estimates Report,” he said.
For months, Africa’s largest economy has been in talks with U.S. officials to secure a trade agreement, but the two sides failed to reach a deal before the deadline set by President Donald Trump.
The collapse of those negotiations led to South Africa facing the steepest tariff rate in sub-Saharan Africa, a move that has dealt a blow to its export competitiveness in the U.S. market.
