South Sudan has successfully repatriated Jesus Munoz-Gutierrez, a Mexican national who was deported from the United States in July 2025.
Gutierrez was among eight men deported to South Sudan under President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown.
The repatriation followed assurances from Mexico that Gutierrez would not face torture, inhumane treatment, or unfair prosecution upon his return.
Gutierrez was handed over to Mexico’s designated ambassador, Alejandro Ives Estivill, who arrived in Juba on Friday.
The ambassador expressed gratitude to the South Sudanese authorities for their cooperation and treatment of Gutierrez with respect for his human rights. Gutierrez will be escorted to Mexico, where he will be reunited with his family.
The Mexican national criticized the US government’s deportation process, stating he felt “kidnapped” and wrongfully transferred to South Sudan. “They did it wrong… and they sent me to South Sudan, like, basically, like, they kidnapped me,” Gutierrez said.
Despite this, he praised the people of South Sudan for their hospitality and treatment during his stay.
South Sudan’s foreign ministry confirmed that six other third-country nationals deported from the US remain in the country, and the government is committed to working with international partners to ensure their safe and humane return.
