The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has launched drone attacks on vital installations in Sudan’s capital, Khartoum, targeting military and logistical sites, including the country’s main oil refinery, power stations, and a fuel depot.
The RSF-led Tasis Coalition claimed responsibility for the attacks, stating they were in response to the “criminal targeting of hospitals and civilian facilities in Darfur and Kordofan”.
This recent escalation marks a significant development in Sudan’s ongoing civil war, which has already created the world’s largest humanitarian crisis and drawn in several foreign powers.
The conflict has displaced over 12 million people and pushed half the population into acute hunger, according to the UN.
The RSF has been fighting the Sudanese army in largely ground attacks in the Darfur and Kordofan regions, while the army has ramped up airstrikes in recent days.
The Tasis Coalition installed a parallel government last month, further complicating the country’s fragile political landscape.
