The Muslim Public Affairs Centre (MPAC) Nigeria has praised the Federal Government for reaffirming its support for the two-state solution and the rights of Palestinians to independence, freedom, and dignity, but urged Abuja to back up its words with concrete actions.

In a statement issued on Thursday, MPAC commended Nigeria’s “unequivocal position” on Palestinian statehood, noting that it aligns with the country’s long-standing tradition of supporting liberation struggles and standing on the side of justice.

The organisation said Nigeria’s stance was timely, coming as the UN General Assembly meets at a moment it described as one of “historic global solidarity,” with more countries moving to recognise Palestine as a sovereign state. MPAC stressed that such recognition represents a correction of decades of “injustice endured by the Palestinian people under occupation, apartheid, and systemic human rights violations by Israel and its enablers.”

Urges Nigeria to Match Words with Action

While welcoming the government’s position, MPAC cautioned that “noble words must now be matched with decisive actions” if Nigeria’s voice is to carry moral weight. The centre listed three key steps it said Abuja should take:

  1. Impose sanctions on Israel for what it described as “relentless violations of international law, apartheid policies, and war crimes.”
  2. Join South Africa’s genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
  3. End security and intelligence-sharing partnerships with Israel in Nigeria’s counter-terrorism efforts.

“The recognition of Palestine as a state is not a gift to be bestowed but a right to be upheld,” the statement read. “The international community cannot continue to look away while an entire people are denied their homeland, freedom, and security.”

MPAC reaffirmed its solidarity with the global movement for Palestinian statehood based on UN resolutions and international law, vowing to continue to amplify voices of justice.

“Justice delayed is justice denied. Nigeria must act now,” said Disu Kamor, Executive Chairman of MPAC Nigeria.
