Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has announced a peaceful protest march to the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja, scheduled for October 20, to demand the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

The march, tagged #FreeNnamdiKanuNow, aims to pressure the government to comply with court orders granting Kanu’s release or expedite his trial.

Sowore extended an invitation to prominent figures, including Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo, Abia State Governor Alex Otti, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, and former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, to join the protest.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has backed Sowore’s campaign, describing Kanu’s detention as a “stain on our belief in the rule of law”. Kanu has been in custody since June 2021, despite a Court of Appeal ruling that his extradition to Nigeria was unlawful.

The government has disobeyed multiple court orders granting him bail, sparking widespread calls for his release.
